In 2015, back before Apple introduced MagSafe for iPhone, we at iOttie released a line of magnetic car mounts. To use one, you needed to install a metal plate kit on the back of your phone or phone case. Then, just like MagSafe, the magnets in the car mount would form a connection with the magnets on your phone for a seamless mounting experience.
This series was called the iTap. The mount proved so popular that we released an updated version in 2018. The iTap 2 was also a crowd pleaser. In fact, Wirecutter lists the iTap 2 as the best car phone mount, combining safety, convenience, and stability.
With the launch of MagSafe for iPhone in 2020 and now the new Qi2 wireless charging standard, we thought it was time to once again refresh this lineup. Next week, we’ll be debuting our new iTap 3 series of magnetic car mounts. Read on to learn more about the series and all the newest upgrades.
ITAP 3 SERIES OVERVIEW
The iTap 3 series features compact, low-profile phone holders that utilize upgraded MagSafe and Qi2 compatible magnets for an easy and secure mounting experience. Featuring ten sets of heat-resistant N52 magnets that firmly grip your phone, the iTap 3 ensures your device stays safely mounted, no matter the weather or road conditions. Plus, we’re including a new magnetic ring adapter for Android and older iPhone users (more on that below).
The series includes three different mounting options: air vent, dash/windshield, and a flush mount. All three feature an anti-slip silicone finish for added support and a gentle, scratch-free connection to your device. A rotating ball joint allows you to adjust the angle of your phone for your driving preference, in portrait or landscape mode.
A CLOSER LOOK AT ALL THREE MOUNTING OPTIONS
Air Vent Mount
The iTap 3 Air Vent Mount features a new adjustable hook design. The hook, made from durable metal, extends with the twist of a dial so you can attach it to air vent blades of varying sizes. Once latched on, you turn the dial the other way to tighten it.
There’s enough space between the mount and the air vent to allow for air flow when using your vehicle’s heat or AC. The air vent mount also features rubber supports on the back to help hold the mount upright and stable throughout your drive.
Dash & Windshield Mount
Our dash and windshield option utilizes a new, streamlined telescopic arm with a spring pin locking system that makes adjusting the arm (which extends from 3 to 6 inches) easier. The arm also pivots on a 260° arc to give you further range of motion.
The base features a super strong, reusable suction cup with sticky gel formula that adheres firmly to windshields and the included dashboard pad. To restore the suction cup, simply rinse it under warm water and then let air dry before re-attaching.
Flush Mount
Lastly, for this series, we’re introducing a brand new flush mount option for even more flexibility. The base of the flush mount features powerful, vehicle-grade 3M adhesive and is made from a flexible plastic that accommodates both flat and curved surfaces. The base also rotates a full 360° for ultimate adaptability.
NEW MAGNETIC RING ADAPTER
To ensure wide compatibility with all devices, each iTap 3 mount includes our new magnetic ring adapter, replacing the metal plate kits in our previous iTap 2 line. The magnetic ring adapter is designed especially for MagSafe and Qi2 compatibility and easily installs on the back of your phone or phone case via vehicle-grade 3M adhesive. The discrete ring adapter is 100% magnetic, ensuring a powerful hold for all phone and case sizes.
LAUNCH DATE
